ATP All Tomorrow's Parties

As news filters in of the on-site accommodation at Mt. Buller being all but sold, All Tomorrow's Parties are pleased to announce a whole new range of options for the aspiring ATP punter seeking off mountain accommodation; hotels, chalets and camping designed to fit all budgets and needs, from couples to groups and families.

But first, our blessed curators, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have been hard at work selecting artists for this second announcement so, without further ado, the bands invited in the second round announcement for All Tomorrow's Parties @ Mt. Buller are...

Combining a love of 70s rock and boogie with a strong 60s psychedelic and eastern influence has earned US band Dead Meadow a cult following the world over. Formed in Washington DC but now residents of Los Angeles, California, Dead Meadow released their eponymous debut in 2000 before unleashing the appropriately titled Howls From the Hills in 2001. A reputation for fierce live shows saw the release of a live album in 2002 before Dead Meadow signed to hip NYC label Matador in 2003 and began the slow process of waking up the public consciousness to their 'Dead' sound. The most recent album Old Growth - released in 2008 - has gone closest to supporting this theory and is their most accessible album to date. ATP welcomes the sonic-boom of Dead Meadow.

Emerging from the fertile Sydney post-punk scene in 1979, The Reels epitomised all that was good about often misused term 'new wave' via such memorable tracks as Prefab Heart, Love Will Find A Way and After the News. Such creative minds could not be pinned down to one style though, and the release in 1981 of Quasimodos Dream (voted as one of the top ten Australian songs of all time by APRA in 2001), followed by the concept album Beautiful (for novelty label K-Tel) in 1982 and covers album Neighbors in 1988 saw the band remembered as cerebral more so than kitsch. A reformation in 2008 brought with it an audience of full-houses again. ATP welcomes the wilful eccentricity of The Reels.

Greek legend Psarandonis may seem like an odd addition to the ATP line-up, however, anyone familiar with the work of Bad Seeds’ violinist and mandocaster player Warren Ellis would also be aware of the strong Mediterranean influence in his music. As such, the addition of Psarandonis is as much a nod to a personal inspiration as the addition of The Saints. It is not Psarandonis' first All Tomorrow's Parties either, having performed at the invite of the Dirty Three at ATP UK back in 2007. As for his own music, Psarandonis is regarded as a master of the lyra, a traditional Cretan folk instrument that he has been playing since the age of 13 (he is now 65). Psarandonis (born Antonis Xylouris) is also noted for the unique timbre of his singing voice and he has released a steady succession of albums dating back to 1973. Appearing with Psarandonis on this trip will be his son and one time Melbourne resident George Xylouris, as well as other guest musicians. ATP welcomes the colossus that is Psarandonis.

Although perhaps better known as 'Smog,' singer/songwriter Bill Callahan nowadays prefers performing under his given non-de-plum and has toured our isle both in solo and band mode on six previous occasions and has placed his bare and  very personal emotions on the table each and every time. Callahan's last Australian visit was in November 2007 and saw him promoting material from his then new release Woke On a Whaleheart. This seventh Australian appearance - at the personal invite of The Bad Seeds - will see Bill Callahan performing at the Mt. Buller ATP only (as well as some select Sydney Festival dates) in a reduced band mode. ATP welcomes the heart and soul of Bill Callahan.

How's that looking so far, still wanting more? Then consider this; internationally renown Melbourne three piece, Dirty Three, will perform their one and only Australian show and their first Victorian appearance since January 2006, at All Tomorrow's Parties Mt. Buller. This time, however, in a special one-off Don't Look Back performance, Dirty Three will perform their magnum opus Ocean Songs in its entirety. This feat has only happened twice before, in London October 2005 and at the Primavera Festival Barcelona in 2007. ATP welcomes from Melbourne, Australia, Dirty Three.

But wait, there's more. With various members still calling Australia home, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds have insisted on a string of local acts to appear to complement the international and more high profile acts appearing at All Tomorrow's Parties Mt. Buller. To that end we present the Bad Seeds local band wish list.

Small Knives, ATP veterans after performing at the invite of Dirty Three curated event at Camber Sands in 2006, are also a Melbourne six piece who perform pop tinged country-folk and have previously performed with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Lambchop and Bad Seed, Conway Savage.

Former Perth residents The Holy Sea are a gangly bunch - seven in number - who, like their forefathers The Triffids, The Bad Seeds, Go-Betweens et al, as well as their peers The Drones, personify something uniquely Australian via their acoustic tinged laments. Be careful not to weep.

A two, sometimes four-piece from Sydney, Hunter Dienna are as inspirited as they are young. The male and female vocal leads, create an intense and dynamic atmosphere that can on one hand come across as dark and assertive and on the other appear serene. It's all about wordplay with Hunter Dienna, so pay attention.

Passenger of Shit is actually a one-man act, signed to Shitwank Records and performing - and we quote - "erotic SPEEDCORE happy TERRORCORE / HARDCORE GABBA / trendy fuckwit breakcore tamborine core TYPE DAnCE MUSIC GAME CORE -and SAD CORE .SCREAMING VOX +harsh shit NOISE AND OTHER dum SHIT MUSIC."

ATP welcomes all these fine local additions to the inaugural Australian All Tomorrow's Parties.

There will be more of course: more bands, movies, music trivia and non-music activities, as well as what the town and infrastructure of Mt.Buller itself provides: ski-lifts, gymnasium, cafes, scenery and countless bars. It's unique and it could only happen at Mt. Buller.
