Tuesday 4th November, 2008 The announcement that UK festival
All Tomorrow's Parties would be visiting Australia in summer 2009 caused a tidal wave of media and public interest. The boutique festival had its first beginnings in 1999 via a Belle & Sebastian curated affair at Camber Sands Holiday Centre in East Sussex, UK and has since grown to accommodate another UK site in Minehead, Somerset. ATP has also branched out to; the historic Queen Mary Ship in Long Beach, LA, a holiday resort in upstate New York and via a series of select single stage curated affairs within the confines of the Primavera Festival in Barcelona, Spain and Pitchfork Festival, Chicago, USA.
It is with that floating principle of what All Tomorrow's Parties can be that the decision to present a singular event in Brisbane has been nixed in favour of a season of shows at the Brisbane Powerhouse and a one-off afternoon/evening affair at the Brisbane Riverstage. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds will headline and curate the Riverstage show and have also selected all of the acts appearing at the Powerhouse. Brisbane audiences are already familiar with the Riverstage line-up featuring UK stargazers Spiritualized, former Go-Between Robert Forster and avant blues solo act James Blood Ulmer, plus Krautrock supergroup Harmonia, young English electronic outfit Fuck Buttons and the indescribable Japanese two-piece Afrirampo, all performing at the Powerhouse.
Joining Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds at the Riverstage, with their sublime instrumental sounds, will be one of Australia’s great cult bands The Necks. Latest additions to the Powerhouse shows are former Swan and Angels of Light frontman Michael Gira and Washington by way of Los Angeles pyschedelic-shoegazers, Dead Meadow.
