ATP Recordings Announce Signing of Tall Firs
'Crooked Smiles' 7" Single / Digital Download Release on 28th November
'Out Of It And Into It' coming March 12th 2012.
ATP Recordings are delighted to announce that we have signed Tall Firs for their next record, 'Out of It And Into It' out March 12th 2012.
The record, their third album, sees the core duo of Aaron Mullan and Dave Mies return to their guitar duo origins, echoing the desolate spaces and warm places introduced on their debut 'Tall Firs', at the same time capturing a spirit of adventure and brutal honesty not seen by them to date.
To celebrate the first single, 'Crooked Smiles', which is about the ATP music festivals and will be released to coincide with the bands supporting tour with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth (see below for dates) we are inviting fans who have footage from past ATP festivals, or who are coming in December to Nightmare Before Christmas, to submit video they have taken there. It can be raw footage or better still edited to parts of the song which you can listen to at Soundcloud. We are looking for off-stage footage only - not live/venue footage. To submit footage to the video project email atprecordings@atpfestival.com for more details - we'll be editing it to create a music video for the track.
The single is out on 28th November on limited edition White 7" vinyl (Cat No ATPRSP16) and Digital Download with non-album b-side Highway 5 - the 7" is available exclusively on tour & via the ATP Store (click to pre-order). iTunes pre-order & audio previews available now.
Aaron Mullan on 'Crooked Smiles':
"This song came out of a team effort. I was drunk driving, hopped a curb, and crashed right into it. - the melody was killed outright, but the words were still hanging on for dear life, so Dave grabbed the tire iron and put 'em out of their misery . The melody came from finding the opening chord by chance: I'd already put my fingers in all the obvious places for that tuning and it was time to either re-tune, or put my fingers in some dark horse locations and hope. After I found the first chord, the rest of the song just implied itself. I learned that tuning from a hippie girl in high school, although it turns out it was popularized by Davey Graham.
I've been to a lot of ATP's (20 +?) and one of my favorite things is watching people pile in on the first day. What's better than seeing smiling girls in their first-day-of-ATP outfits, laughing with their crew, literally staggering under the weight of the beer they intend to pound right fucking now? It's so optimistic I could lose my shit. And then later you see the same people 5 gigs and 1000 brews later staggering again, but now they're alone in the dark and rain, still smiling in the midnight shadow of the Butlin's tabernacle, searching for one more good time. Sorry, I'm a sap, but even the thought brings a tear to my eye."
